Watkins Glen Race Report 2008
June 8, 2008
Solid finish at the Glen and second top five for the 2008 season. Watkins
Glen was an awesome experience. The three day event was a fairly smooth
experience.
Practice started off in record high temperatures not to mention the
suffocating humidity. First practice we used to get familiarized with the race
track and help me establish vital reference points. After a few adjustment and
more laps we kept picking up on speed and knocking down our overall lap times.
By days end I would know where the limit was at the bus stop after I ended up
pushing the limits ever-so-slightly and ending up in the pee gravel. No real
damage.
Qualifying was hindered by a fellow competitor's bad calculation on the get
up lap. Unfortunately it cost us time, however we were a solid 14th in the
field. Not bad for a day at the road course.
Race day started off with high humidity in the air and by race time you
could cut it with a knife. Had several solid starts and began to work my way up
the field. We had a red flag due to the weather which was about half way; my
spotter thought he was going to die between the funnel clouds and the
lightning. He made it.
When the race was restarted I was ninth and worked on making some more
passes which put us in seventh position before a green white checkered as
assigned. Once taking the green I knew it would be a matter of time before
something big happened. By turn one this was obvious, after several maneuvers
and some luck on our side we moved up to a solid 4th place. Stayed focus on
what we had been doing all day which was stay consistent and knock out laps all
day, with that mentality I finished the race and was awarded 4th place points.
Great point's day for us.
At the end of the day, The Glen was a very enjoyable track where I gained a lot of experience and enjoyment out of it. As a company we ended up with a 2-3-4 finish which was also satisfying after the week we had at So-Bo.
